Riga has never been a city that was on my travel wishlist, but after visiting Latvia's capital, I have to admit that it is definitely worth a visit. Well, Riga is rather small and internationally unimportant; it is not like London or Paris, but worth seeing in its own way. I put together a list of things that are a must do and see in Riga.
Visit the old town. Being entirely listed as a world heritage site, the old town of Riga with all its restaurants, shops and hotels is the most famous part of the city. I highly recommend an organized tour, they are free! Guided tours in English start everyday at 12 am from St. Peters Church.
Centrs. The district Centrs is located at the northeastern part of the old town. It is the commercial center of Riga and famous for its Art Noveau architecture (Jugendstil). This is my favorite part of the city, just the building facades are worth a visit!
Eat Latvian food, which is much potato, cabbage, beef, pork and fish. A place to eat decent Latvian food at great prices is called Lido (Elizabetes iela 65, LV-1050 and seven other places in Riga). It is a restaurant with cafeteria style. I also recommend trying the local liquor Riga Balsam.
Bars. A really cool skyline bar can be found at the main station (Stacijas laukums): Neo, open until 11 pm on the top floor with a fantastic view.
