It was not my first time in Hamburg. I have been traveling to this city many times before and I have to say we have a love-hate relationship: Lovely to visit, but not a place where I want to live. Nevertheless, there are a few places in Hamburg that are definitely worth a visit, so make sure check them out when in Hamburg ☺
For shopping go to Jungfernstieg (Alster Arkaden), which is at the artificial lake Binnenalster. Binnenalster is a lovely place to sit, enjoy some ice-cream and watching the boats. Directly at the Alster is the hotel Fairmont Vier Jahreszeiten. It is simply beautiful! The Speicherstadt is a district of warehouses from the 1900s. It is at the southern end of Alte Deichstraße and a must-see when in Hamburg. At Speicherstadt you can also find the world's largest model railway layout, the Minatur Wunderland, which is pretty cool for nerds like me ☺ Near the Speicherstadt is a relatively new quarter of the city with is called HafenCity with modern architecture including the new and finally opened Elbphilharmonie (first picture) that I absolutely recommend visiting, the design and its construction is truly amazing.
In summer I love making boat trips from Landungsbrücken, but those can sometimes be quite pricey. So, make sure that you have a HVV ticket that includes free boat rides. You either hate or love the district Sankt Pauli. I personally do not loke this place, but I still recommend visiting it once. The best places to eat in Hamburg are Schanzenviertel, which offers well vegan food, or Karolinenviertel where locals like to eat.
